Kvyat to join old foe Vettel as Ferrari development driver

10 enero 2018 16:20

Sebastian Vettel and Daniil Kvyat will have the chance to put their differences behind them after it was announced the Russian will join Ferrari as a development driver.

The pair had a well-publicised falling out during the 2016 season, when Vettel christened Kvyat "the torpedo" after being crashed into in successive races in China and Russia.

Kvyat took Vettel out in Sochi, causing the German to let out an expletive-laden rant which included: "honestly, what the f*** are we doing here?"

After that race, Kvyat was dropped by Red Bull and demoted to sister team Toro Rosso, with whom he finished the season in 14th place - seven spots lower than the previous year.

His struggles continued in 2017, with only two points finishes from the opening 14 races, after which he was dropped in favour of Pierre Gasly.

Toro Rosso principal Franz Tost said in October that Kvyat's departure from the team was due to both parties losing confidence in each other, but the Russian may see his move to Ferrari as a chance to earn a full-time seat for 2019, with speculation ongoing that Kimi Raikkonen will not extend his stay beyond this year.
